Abstract

First, I review practical reasons for using stochastic methods in inverse problems in hydrogeology. Second, I describe some important and ftmdamental differences among prevailing stochastic approaches. In particular, I point out differences between the geostatistical and the classic stochastic approach used in estimation methods. 1 Introduction A practical way to infer the hydrogeologic properties of a forma- tion is by observing and analyzing its response to excitations. For example, one can estimate the transmissivity and storativity of an aquifer around a well by performing a pumping test, i.e., by pump- ing at a constant rate and measuring the drawdown in the well. The transmissivity and storativity are adjusted to match the theoretical drawdown curve with the observations. Tracer tests yield additional use
