Abstract

The city of Volta Redonda has as a main source of industrial activity the largest steel facility in Brazil. Its coke production is claimed to be a major source of benzene and other aromatic hydrocarbons. FEEMA, the Rio de Janeiro State Environmental Protection Agency, decided to monitor the air quality in several stationary sampling sites in the city, aiming to follow the implementation of pollution control measures in industries, especially, CSN. The concentrations of pollutants, location of the main source, fate and wind regime, were investigated in two campaigns performed in 95/96 and 99.
