Abstract
A new procedure for leak detection in fluid pipelines is presented -a procedure based on the negative pressure wave detection method involving the utilization of special pressure drop algorithms. These algorithms enable the quick detection and identification of both the leak volume and 1ocation.Large leaks in pipelines can occur rather quickly and cause a temporary pressure drop at the damaged area which spreads with the local pressure wave velocity as a negative shock wave upstream and downstream throughout the pipeline. This can be detected by means of pressure measuring gauges in pipeline stations.
In order to recognize and eliminate operationally caused pressure drops (e.g. through pump switches or control valve adjustments) and, therefore, avoid false alarms as much as possible, the following pressure drop algorithms are employed. These algorithms represent the essence of the procedure:
hydraulic coupling of pressure drop incidents within one pipeline station
hydraulic coupling between pipeline stations with regard to past incidents
hydraulic coupling between pipeline stations with regard to future incidents
As a rule, the software for the detection and location of leaks, is installed in a host computer at the control station of the pipeline with data exchange with the SCADA system. Prerequisite for the flawless functioning is that the pressure and pressure drop measurements are time stamped in substations along the pipeline’s track.
Furthermore, this paper elaborates on the exact function of the software, both in packed pipe sections, as well as in slack-line areas. The precision, thus attain- able, is likewise discussed.
