Abstract
This paper discusses measurement of sustainability, emphasizing indicators
applicable to describe the progress toward environmental sustainability for a
nation. Among the numerous sustainable development indicators proposed in the
last two decades, the environmental sustainability index (ESI) developed by the
World Economic Forum (WEF) was selected for performing quantitative
analysis based on local data and characteristics of Taiwan and other major Asian
countries. Firstly introduced to the public in the WEF annual meeting in the year
2000, the pilot study of ESI was designed to allow international comparison of
