Applications Of The Method Of Caustics To
Contact Problems

Abstract
This paper describes two approaches to simulate caustic images
formed from contact points. One is based on the hertzian contact theory
and another is based on the boundary element method. By using the
characteristics of the caustic images, the values of traction and
tangential force coefficient can be determined. These approaches can be
applied to analyse contact problems in rolling contact fatigue, fretting
fatigue, etc.
1 Introduction
The method of caustics is an optical technique utilising caustic
images formed by light rays transmitted through or reflected from near
stress singularity fields such as contact point, crack tip, notch root, etc.
