Abstract

This paper deals with the wear properties of five different laser cladded Cobalt- base Stellite alloys. It is shown that fusing hardfacing powders onto a stainless steel substrate by means of a high power laser beam results in novel micro- structures. As such, wear testing of these coatings becomes essential to predict their behaviour in service. A comparison is made between the mechanical behaviour under abrasive, sliding and fretting wear conditions. 1. Introduction Cobalt-base alloys are used as wear-resistant materials for hardfacing cheap steel substrates. Of the different depositing techniques for metal powders such as plasma spray, tungsten inert gas, oxyacetylene flame and laser cladding the latter produces a dense coati
