Domain Optimization In FEM Modelling Of
Power Cable Heat Transfer

Abstract
The transmission and distribution of electric power with underground cables is
closely related with the heat transfer of their surroundings. A finite element
approach with the domain optimization is proposed. Such analysis is provided by the
use of a FEM software package containing the originally developed automatic mesh
generator. An illustrative numerical example dealing with engineering real-life
problem is presented with this work.
1 Introduction
The power system design is governed by two basic requirements: supply security
and aesthetic considerations which are usually satisfied by the use of underground
cables, Their ampacity and lifetime is strictly related with the heat transfer capacity
of their surroundings.
The power cable ampacity has been determined by means of various numerical
