Abstract

Determination of the coverage of shot peened surfaces F. Puente Leon Institutfiir Me/3- und Regelungstechnik, University of Karlsruhe, Germany. Abstract Shot peening is a technique used to increase the flexural fatigue strength of ma- chine parts which are heavily loaded by alternate bending. The shot impacts in- duce a compressive strain tangential to the surface which increases the endurance limit. To achieve a defined surface coverage, this process has to be calibrated by measuring the coverage as a function of time. Currently, this is done visually by inspecting test surfaces with a microscope. This paper presents a novel technique enabling an automated determination of the surface coverage. For this purpose, an image series is recorded by varying the illumination systematically, and subse- quently the series is fused to a symbolic result describing the areas showing the impacts. Thanks to the simultaneous analysis of signal intensities in illumination space, no consideration of ne
