Boundary Layer Flow With Seepage

Abstract
Laboratory and numerical (CFD) simulations were carried out for a steady open channel flow with upward seepage injection through the channel bed. By comparison with experiment data, the CFD model was found to give a good prediction of the flow field and resulting turbulent quantities. The computed results reveal that seepage into the channel through the bed surface produces a decrease in near-bed flow velocity with a corresponding increase in near-surface velocity, an increase in Reynolds shear stress and a reduction in total stress. The decreased total bed shear stress is consistent with the results of other previous investigations. An approximate method for estimating the total bed shear stress reduction is given and was found to provide realistic estimates.
