Effect Of Roughness On The Frictional Behaviour Between Spheres (SUJ2) And Plane (0.45% Carbon Steel)

Abstract
In a recent study concerning the sliding friction test between sphere(SUJ2) and plane(S45C) under a dry condition, it has been confirmed that the finite relative displacement is observed before the maximum friction and the static friction is smaller than the kinematic friction.
In this study, the sliding friction tests were carried out under the same condition using the test specimens with different surface roughnesses. As the result, it has been made clear that a) the change of roughness hardly influences on the characteristics of the friction force-relative displacement curve, b) under the elastic-plastic contact force, reflecting the fact that friction force is determined by the state of surface damage due to relative displacement, the static friction between buffed- and papered- specimens are larger than the one between buffed- and buffed- specimens, c) under the elastic-plastic contact force, the maximum friction between buffed- and papered- specimens are larger than the one between buffed- and buffed- specimens, d) the effect of surface roughness on the kinematic friction is comparatively small under the elastic contact force and is large under the elastic- plastic contact force.
