Abstract
We describe recently developed Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) based
methods for measuring the concentration of two- or three-component systems as
a function of height and time. Results from sedimenting and floating systems
with a single solid phase were obtained with an NMR visible liquid phase and
NMR-invisible solid phases. Vertical profiles of the liquid phase signal were
observed by repeated one-dimensional imaging. Profiles of the solid phase were
then calculated by subtracting from the profile of a pure liquid and hindered
settling functions were calculated. Two NMR imaging techniques were
developed which allow for the measurement of two NMR visible phases in three
phase systems. One method relies on differences in the longitudinal relaxation
time Ti of two substances, and the other depends on the difference in NMR
frequency between protons and ' 9 ~ nuclei. Preliminary results in mixt
