Abstract
The Berthelot tube has been used for many years to study the behaviour of
liquids under tension until tensile failure occurs and the liquid cavitates. Whilst
the liquid is under tension it exists in a doubly metastable state, being both
superheated and supercooled simultaneously. Reported herein is the first study of
the cavitation bubble dynamics upon tensile failure of water in a Berthelot tube
using both static and dynamic pressure measurements and high speed
photography. Also presented is the first photographic evidence of ice formation
from supercooled water which is simultaneously superheated by tension.
