Abstract
Several types of Al-alloys to be used in aircraft structures are manufactured by
extrusion resulting in a strongly orientated anisotropic microstructure with a high
degree of texture. To assess a reliability and safety of structures containing
crack-like defects, fatigue crack growth (FCG) data and knowledge of
mechanisms affecting the FCG are needed. FCG characteristics and affecting
mechanisms in an aircraft Al 4114 alloy in the direction of extrusion and in the
perpendicular direction were investigated at the load asymmetries R=0.1 and
R=0.5, respectively. Special non-standard specimens with side notches were
used to prevent cracking in inappropriate directions caused by
