Abstract

Part-through cracked round bars under cyclic bending A. Carpinteri Istituto di Scienza e Tecnica delle Costruzioni, Universitd di Padova, Via Marzolo 9, 35131 Padova, Italy ABSTRACT A part-through cracked round bar subjected to constant amplitude cyclic bending loading is analyzed. The aspect ratio a/I) of the initial elliptical-arc flaw ranges from 0.0 (straight crack front) to 1.0 (circular-arc crack front). The fatigue crack propagation is predicted by applying the Paris-Erdogan law, with the stress-intensity factor along the crack front obtained through a finite element analysis. Different initial crack sizes, material properties and loading parameters are assumed. For each case being considered, the surface flaw maintains the elliptical-arc shape during the whole fatigue growth, and the crack aspect ratio converges to about 0.5 for £ = 0.6, with the parameter £ equal to the ratio between the maximum crack depth and the bar diameter.
