Grogan Faculty of Information & Engineering Systems, Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds, UK Introduction An information system (IS) can be defined as a system whose objective and functions encompass the gathering, accepting, processing, storing, retrieving, producing and presenting of information. This provision must be relevant to an organization, in such a way that the information is accessible and useful to those who wish to use it, including managers, staff, clients and other interested citizens: In essence an information system is a human activity system which may or may not involve the use of computers. These functions are enacted by differing combinations of people and devices - the latter increasingly and predominantly based around information and communications technology (ICT).
