Abstract

Several volume-tracking, interface advection algorithms are compared by predicting the motion of simple shapes in prescribed, non-straining veloc- ity fields. The influences of Courant number and grid resolution are also investigated. The results indicate that, for these velocity fields, significant gains can be realised by using a higher order reconstruction technique such as linear line segments. Distortion is reduced by increasing the grid resolu- tion for all cases. However, increasing the temporal resolution (decreasing Courant number) has different results for different algorithms. 1 Introduction Computational models of combustion, phase change, and two—phase flow must solve for the position of some unknown free boundary as part of the solution procedure.
