Abstract

Heat treatment is a common way to enhance the properties of a metal part, i.e. induction quenching is a process to obtain higher surface hardness and favourable residual stress of a steel component. Traditional empirical and experimental methods to optimise the heat transfer process are both time consuming and expensive, especially when many process/material parameters are involved. Hence, simulation of the heat treatment process using the finite element method is a cheaper and faster alternative for the process and material optimisation. This paper describes a way to simulate the induction quenching process of shafts. An axi-symmetric simulation model is built in a finite element code, SYSWELD, and the process simulation has
