Abstract
Rock bumps or rock bursts occur mostly at deep excavations, during mining,
tunneling at high enough overburden, and shaft excavations. As an effect
of instability of tunnel or shaft face, the extrusion of the rock mass into
free space is studied both experimentally and mathematically. Frictional
ignition and tensile overstressing of the mass may also cause the rock burst.
This paper focuses on this phenomenon, starting with a specially prepared
experiment and a new numerical procedure. Both these tools provide a
new view at process of initiation of the failure of rock at tunnel face. The
experimental study model simulates the situation on site, while numerical
model informs about detailed material behavior at local zones endangered
by the overstressing. Correctness of the numerical model is verified by
