Abstract
As-cast commercial aluminium extrusion alloys contain dissolvable precipitates
and stable intermetallic particles that make the material unsuitable for further
mechanical processing. These inhomogeneities can be removed with a thermal
treatment, during which precipitates dissolve and needle-shaped iron based (3-
particles transform into more spherical and benign a-particles.
The dissolution of precipitates can be described as a moving boundary prob-
lem. The moving grid and the phase field method are suitable numerical methods
to solve this problem. The moving grid method has been used successfully to
model the dissolution of the precipitates. However, it is difficult to capture com-
