Abstract
The purpose of this study was to observe the damping characteristics of
four different types of structural plates; one homogeneous Aluminum 2024
plate and three composite plates comprised of 977-2 Carbon Fiber/ Epoxy
(IM7). The plates were fabricated using a Composite Air Press. The
orientations of the plates were: [0/0/90/90]s, [90/0/90/0]s, and [90/90/0/0]s.
Natural frequency and bending modes were obtained using a finite element
analysis. These results were compared to natural frequency and bending
modes of cracked plates of the same structural elements. This paper presents
a numerical and experimental approach to find the optimal sensor location
to detect the crack. The numerical results indicate that the sensor sensitivity
is unaffect
