Abstract

When one measures soil or foundation vibrations, one often has the following problem. The soil profile is only known down to a certain depth, and there is some uncertainty about the behaviour of the thin top layer. One wants to know the effects of a stiff underlying soil or of a soft top layer. A layered model of the soil may better explain the experimental results. By integration in wavenumber domain the wave-field due to a harmonic point- load can be calculated. The solution then can be used to determine the dynamic stiffness of a rigid or flexible foundation. Results of some layered situations are presented, and the different effects on the horizontal and vertical compo- ments of the vibrations of the soil and of the foundation are discussed. Experi- mental results of both problems (wave propagation and
