Abstract
The paper investigates the transmission loss and the sound fields within
acoustic mufflers. The analysis is based on two kinds of calculations, namely:
1. One-dimensional analysis.
2. Two-dimensional analysis, by FEM.
The results of the analysis are compared when possible with results presented
in other publications. While the one-dimensional theory enables closed form
solutions, and investigation of the physical meaning by analyzing the algebraic
solutions, it does not involve lateral effects. Hence, the limits of the
one-dimensional theory are defined by comparing the response functions,
including the transmission loss and using visualization of the internal sound
field within the muffler, which exhibits the lateral effect's dependence on
frequencies in the two- and the three-dimensional models. In this
