Abstract

A numerical method for calculating the two-dimensional scattering of inci- dent SH waves by canyons, near-surface inhomogeneities and alluvial valleys is presented. The reliability of this approach is tested against exact solutions for semispherical canyons and valleys. Solutions for some arbitrary geome- tries were obtained and compared with other numerical methods. Finally, the method is applied to try to reproduce some features of the observed amplification in the Mexico City Valley. Introduction A
