A Diffusion-based Conceptual Model Of Cross-
Shore Transport

Abstract
A description is given of development work carried out on a conceptual model of cross-shore
transport. This model is based on the premise that the transport of sediment can be represented
as a diffusive process, the resulting scheme being simple and economical to operate. Models
of this type, therefore, are suitable for the prediction of long-term beach changes.
1 Introduction
There is an increasing need to be able to predict long-term (decades to
centuries) changes in the coastal zone caused by human interference and global
warming. These changes take place in both the longshore and the cross-shore
directions but, by using a splitting technique, the longshore and cross-shore
parts of the problem can be solved in isolation, using numerical models.
