Abstract
A steel vessel is being considered to contain the blast from high explosive tests.
The shock from the detonation causes the vessel to expand and subsequently
vibrate, involving both radial movement and vibration.
As part of a design study, comparative calculations were performed for one
particular model configuration. The explosion was represented as a ball of highly
compressed gas that was suddenly allowed to expand. Pressures and impulses
were calculated and the elastic-plastic response determined at a number of key
locations. The numerical methods involved in the comparison included both 2D
and 3D coupled fluid/structure analyses and decoupled 2D analyses. For the
