Energy Absorption Of A Layered Cladding Under
Blast Loading

Abstract
The paper discusses the response of a layered cladding to a pressure pulse and
the associated energy absorption, which depends on the geometry of a single
layer and the material properties. The dynamic loading is modelled as a
triangular pulse with a duration of milliseconds. Isotropic work hardening with
dynamic yield properties according to the Cowper-Symonds relation is employed
to model a steel layer, while a strain rate insensitive isotropic work hardening
material model is used for analysing the response of an aluminium layer. The
efficiency of the layered claddings in the design of blast resistant structures is
discussed.
