Driven Caissons And Bridge Breakwaters

Abstract
The use of traditional rubble-mound breakwaters to provide sheltered
areas inside ports requires an enormous volume of fill material. Vertical
structures are being used in Spain with greater frequency each day,
because they reduce the use of rocks and rubble, materials which are
becoming limited.
This article describes two innovative solutions for the construction of
breakwaters: driven caissons and bridge breakwaters formed by caissons.
Two cases are shown at the Malaga and Ibiza ports where SENER and
DRAGADOS suggested the use of these typologies. Both typologies
involve important environmental benefits, since they eliminate or reduce
drastically the dredging and the quarry materials necessary for the works.
