Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to present results of a cost -effective
optimisation and material selection methodology as applied to cylindrial
pressure vessels. The loads are pressure range, temperature and chemical loads.
Six common material types are included: corrosion resistant alloy and high
strength steel, stainless steel, aluminium, glass fiber reinforced plastic and high
strength cast iron. Both the goals and the constraints are formulated in the
same fuzzy way and not in a conventional way of using equation constraints
and penalty functions. The total goal is to maximize the satisfaction of the
customer on the cost of the vessel material, the buckling strength, fatigue crack
growth life, environmental end
