Abstract
Structural optimisation refers to the process of generating optimal thicknesses for a
structure by solving mathematical programming problems. Such a problem solved
in EADS-Airbus deals with flutter optimisation. The objective function is the
structural mass to be minimised. Constraints are lower bounds imposed on
aeroelastic dampings, to avoid any coupling in the flight envelope.
The traditional approach in structural optimisation is to build a sequence of
approximate models, each of them being optimised. Moreover, in flutter
optimisation, these approximate models come from reduced dynamic models since
modal superposition is used.
This method is well suited for convergence but appears to be very time-
consuming. The problem comes from modal reanalysis which requires as much
FEM updating and as many recomputations
