Non-linear Supersonic Panel Flutter And Control
Using Shape Memory Alloy

Abstract
Due to aerodynamic heating, flight vehicles at supersonic speeds are subjected
to surface panel temperatures that can potentially reach several hundred degrees.
This paper will present the temperature effect on large-amplitude flutter of
composite panels, and the suppression of flutter by embedding prestrained shape
memory alloy (SMA) in composite panels. The finite element formulation and
the two-step solution procedure in conjunction with the incremental method for
temperature-dependent nonlinear material properties of SMA are presented
briefly. Results are obtained for a laminated composite panel to demonstrate the
effectiveness of SMA in control of nonlinear panel flutter.
