A Theory For Small Projectiles Impact On Concrete Barriers

Abstract
This work is focused on exposing a theoretical model for the simulation of the impact and penetration of small projectiles impact on concrete barriers. We emphasize two characteristics of the model. Firstly, assuming reasonable hypotheses arose from previous experience, the impact can be modelled taking into account only the equations of hi-dimensional rigid body motion derived from rational mechanics, so avoiding the choice and adjustment of any constitutive equation for concrete, projectiles and their interactions.
We can also emphasize its potentially wide range of applications. In the beginning the model can be applied to the impact of any hard core projectile type on concrete, assuming certain conditions are met regarding the concept of \“small” projectiles as well as \“massive” and \“brittle” concrete targets, which will be explained clearly later, In second place, we state the main importance to consider projectile deviation into the target. The least distance horn the rear face of the target that the projectile reaches is essential to predict scabbing, and this distance does not depend only on the characteristics and velocity of projectiles, but also on its deviation from its precise path inside the target. Generally, in computational models such deviation is not considered because it implies violating the hypothesis of axisymmetric states for stress and strain fields, which makes the problem even more complex,
