Seismic Response Of A Narrow Shaped Valley: Numerical Analysis And Field Measurements

Abstract
The present study concerns the assessment of the seismic response of a V-shaped valley located in northwestern Greece with mean slope inclination of about 20° to 25°. The task is accomplished in two different approaches; a numerical one and an experimental one. The theoretical numerical analysis is based on a 2D finite-element mesh where the behavior of soil elements is modeled as <
> and the underlying bedrock as a linear elastic medium. The results of the theoretical approach are compared with those employing empirical transfer functions, computed as Fourier spectral ratios between ground motions recorded at points on the slopes of the valley and at its bottom (reference point). Strong motion input for the theoretical analysis come from a near-field, an intermediate-field and a far-field ‘design’ earthquake. The ‘in situ’ ground motion recordings came from a nearby blast. The results are mainly interpreted as topographic effects since the nonlinear behavior of the soil column is very limited.Keywords
