The Structural Characteristics Of A Traditional
Deidou Wooden Framing System In Taiwan

Abstract
The wooden frame is an axiomatic element of the Han architectural tradition and
is well preserved in listed buildings at various scales. While there are different
forms in which vertical pillars (or columns) and horizontal beams made of wood
can be related, one can differentiate two basic wooden framing systems in
Taiwan: Tailiang and Deidou (pillars and beams) and Chuandou (pillars and
transverse tie beams). Deidou has developed from Tailiang. The main difference
between these two is that the Deidou frame uses a series of bracket systems to
take the place of the small column (gua-zhu) of the Tailiang frame.
Based on a literature review and fieldworks on the dismantling of existing
traditional buildings, this paper tries to probe into the principles of construction
of the Deidou frame, including their c
