Abstract
Parcels, into a sugar-cane 44,500 ha supplying area located both sides of River Panuco, have
been irrigated with river waters for some years.. Farmers noticed their plots located
downstream of this area, started to be salinized. They also reported that at some determined
daily hours, the river water got a salty taste due to a probable tide effect because the river level
reached the 0 m.a.s.l. some days of the year, though the Gulf of Mexico sea is at 47 km far
from the site. Then the sugar mill engineers decided the sugar-cane supplying area to be
progressively moved upstream. However, the worries about water quality remained, hence a
sampling of phreatic waters was carried out, to verify alternative water sources for irrigat
