1. Introduction
Inasmuch as the pumping and treating of contaminated groundwater is the most prevalent form of
remediation in North America, it is important to locate and operate discharging or recharging wells
so as to minimize overall project costs. To achieve this goal, a computer-assisted design procedure
has been developed. The methodology involves the combination of groundwater-flow models and
operations-research algorithms. In this approach the operations-research algorithm provides an
initial design, specified by the analyst, to the groundwater-flow model. The groundwater model
determines the impact of this design on the groundwater flow system and returns this information
to the operations-research algorithm. This algorithm utilizes information regarding the response of
the groundwater system to improve on the initial design. Having accomplished this first iteration
