Abstract
An approach is presented to determine the appropriate spatial resolution of a flood
damage model, and make an order-of-magnitude estimate for the mesh size at mu-
nicipality level. The spatial distribution of the flood damage is considered as an
approximation of a continuous flood damage landscape, which can be found by
interpolation of the available grid. The truncation error due to this schematization
is compared with the uncertainty in the total flood damage to determine the appro-
priate spatial resolution. The results indicate that the present mesh size of 150 m
seems reasonable. At municipality level the appropriate spatial resolution takes on
values in the range between 100 m and 1000 m, depending on the local variability
in flood damage density.
