Abstract
Biofiltration is an efficient technology, which involves passing chemical-laden
gases through a moist porous medium (packing material) containing active
microorganisms. Although this technology is apparently simple, its effectiveness
relies on the optimization of several operation parameters and the selection of a
suitable paclung or carrier material. Whereas the steady-state performance of the
biofiltration processes has been extensively studied, the transient behaviour under
shock loading conditions has received little attention.
In this study, four organic packing materials were characterized and tested for
biofiltration purposes. After selecting the best carrier material, the response of the
biofilter to sudden changes in the hydrogen sulphid
