Abstract
The Sone river originates from the Amarkantak hills in M.P. (India) and flows
towards the east, irrigating the agricultural land in the state of Bihar. This also is
the site of origin of the Nannada flowing towards the west and the Mahanadi
flowing towards the south. The Sone pick up weir was constructed in 1873-74 by
Sir C.H. Dickens at Indrapuri for irrigating 0.36 Mha. About 8 km upstream of
the weir, the present Sone Barrage was constructed during 1962-65. In 1973 the
Sone Command Area Development Authority was set up with the objectives of
formulating programmes and schemes for integrated agriculture and rural
development, implementation of schemes necessary for the development of the
area as well as the promotion of schemes for irrigation, drainage and flood
