Abstract
Sustainability, in its widest sense, implies maximizing the potential for human
survival, while minimizing the damage to the environment - i.e. to the
atmosphere, to the planet Earth, and to the Universe in which it floats. Yet this
definition contains an inner contradiction. Maximization of human survival
results in a fast-growing world population, which drains the planet's resources,
and which consequently jeopardizes human survival. This contradiction affects
all fields of applied human activity such as Medicine, Science, Technology,
Economics, Phlosophy, etc.
This paper presents a view of sustainability through the lens of urban planning
and design: "Intimate Anonymity", a theory of human habitation, argues that the
"city" is as natural to humans as a beehive is to bees. The city must draw its
