Abstract
The high production costs of metal matrix composites (MMCs) sustain the effort
of increasing the use of near-net shape technologies. The need of obtaining
structural components showing improved properties with respect to the semi-
finished products (billets or ingots) imposes not only the choice of the proper
manufacturing technology but, also, the selection of the optimised processing
parameters in order to acquire a refined material microstructure without defects
like microcracks. Among hot deformation processes, attractive for their
relatively low cost, forging is particularly difficult to optimise because of the
