Abstract
A three-dimensional model for the simulation of the temperature distribution
during deep penetration laser beam welding of thin sheets is presented. The
convective heat transfer in the molten zone is taken into account based on a
numerical solution of the conservation equations of momentum, mass and energy.
For the steady state, the computation is carried out using a finite difference scheme
on staggered grids.
1 Introduction
The temperature distribution during welding is important since it accounts
for the evaluation of the microstructure, residual stresses and distortion.
The measurement of the thermal cycle is difficult because of the high tem-
perature range and the existence of a multi- phase system. A remedy is the
use of mathematical models. If success in simulation of the temperature has
