Abstract
To predict the behaviour of a shell and tube heat exchanger it is imperative to
determine the conditions existing within the shell. This is especially critical if
leakage between shell and baffles and between shell and tubes exists, which
holds in most of the practical cases. However, technical limitations do not allow
for making these measurements without disturbing the actual conditions. In this
work an experimental rig was developed, which would only negligibly disturb
the actual flow and heat transfer conditions. Additionally it has the flexibility to
allow for pressure and temperature measurements along each tube in the shell,
practically at any desired position in axial direction. Moreover number of
segmental baffles can be varied as desired. The results have shown that
behaviour of temperature and pressure profiles is well in accordance with th
