Abstract
In the present work, the development of a coupled thermo-mechanical finite
element model of plane-strain orthogonal metal cutting with continuous chip
formation is presented. Friction along the tool-chip interface plays a very
important role in the metal cutting process. Modelling of interfacial friction was
based on constant shear friction. Whenever the tool come in contact with the
workpiece, it is necessary to impose non-penetration constraints. In order to
accurately simulate the metal cutting process a flow stress model based on
process dependent parameters such as strain, strain-rate and temperature was
used. To simulate separation of the chip from the work-material, a geometrical
chip-separation criterion, based on the distance between the tool tip and the
nodal point located immediately ahead, is implemented into the cod
