Abstract

The failure of systems design methodology to meet the unstructured requirements of systems such as management decision support is addressed. A proposal is made to adopt relevant features from a structured approach to design, used in management science (Strategic Choice), and from a soft approach used in systems development (Soft Systems Method), producing a hybrid which is capable of enhancing the ability of design approaches to meet the informational needs of the manager. 1 Introduction Software engineering uses different disciplines in an effort to formalise the development of systems. It uses the concept of structures to decompose a complex problem into manageable 'chunks'. Methodologies are systematic procedures to produce structured
