Abstract
Concern for indoor air quality has focussed considerable attention on the design
and operation of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. One
critical issue is the accurate sensing of the quantity of air entering the system
through the outdoor air intake ducting. Maintaining even the minimum desired
outside air quantity is particularly troublesome in buildings with variable-air-
volume (VAV) type HVAC systems. Most of the recommended strategies require
direct sensing and measuring of the quantity of incoming outdoor air.
Unfortunately, in HVAC inlet ducting, the necessary straight run for accurate flow
measurement with conventional instruments is not available. As a potential
