Abstract

Instability of plane Poiseuille flow between compliant walls is investigated when both walls have the same compliance. This investigation, which anal- yses the stability without imposing predefined symmetry on disturbances, supplements the work done by Davies & Carpenter^, who examined the sta- bility of the same flow with respect to symmetric disturbances. It is found numerically that an anti-symmetric disturbance can destabilise the flow at the Reynolds number far less than the critical Reynolds number determined by symmetric disturbances. 1 Introduction Research into compliant coatings has be
