The Intricacies Of Modeling A Simple Dipole

Abstract
A simple dipole experiment is modeled using a boundary element method
approach. This computational approach has been shown to be well suited for
handling a large volume of electrolyte and for handling the governing differential
equation for electrochemical corrosion. Past work has shown that this
computational method is adequate for modeling impressed current cathodic
protection systems on ships by using direct comparison with experimental tank
testing results.
This paper focuses on determining the effect of the testing tank's geometry,
sensor placement and material on a simple dipole system. The material
polarization curve for the walls of the testing tank is approximated as insulated
