Abstract

A seismic design procedure that does not take into account the cumulative plastic deformation demands in the earthquake-resistant structure could lead to unreliable design. Strictly speaking, taking into account such demands not only implies the knowledge of their magnitude, but of their sequence and time-history. Nevertheless, the average plastic energy that the structure dissipates during the design ground motion is usually enough information to evaluate the effect of low- cycle fatigue in its structural performance. 1 Introduction Several researchers and practical engineers are currently promoting the modernization of seismic design through displacement based seismic design methodologies [1,2].
