Abstract
The approaches adopted for rainfall-runoff modelling can be classified into two
types: Conceptual and Systems Theoretic. Conceptual models give due
consideration to the underlying physical process; whereas, the systems theoretic
models do not. In recent years, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been
proposed as efficient tools for modelling and forecasting. Stochastic and ANN
models can be classified as systems theoretic models. Researchers have used
both conceptual and systems theoretic approaches for rainfall-runoff modelling
individually but the attempts to combine the two approaches have been lacking.
However, it must be realized that an integrated approach that combines the
conceptual and systems theoretic approaches may be able to better represent the
rainfall-runoff process. This can be
