Abstract
After the Elbe flood event of August 2002 ongoing river engineering works
have been placed in the center of attention. Proposed actions include dike
displacement, floodplain excavation, and the retention basins. Flood risk,
however, is not the only concern for water managers. Along the Elbe River
several natural reserves can be found that form an essential habitat for rare
fauna and vegetation. It is not yet clear how the hydromorphological
consequences of river engineering works will affect the ecology of the
floodplains. The formulation of an optimal management strategy requires indepth
understanding of the interaction of these measures with the socialeconomic,
ecologic, and physical processes at different spatial and temporal
